Observe, orient, decide and act. The OODA loop was developed by a U.S Air Force Colonel as a combat operations process, demonstrating how agility can beat raw power against human opponents.
Nowadays it can be applied to all sorts of stuff from commercial to educational.
Basically, the quicker you can go through the loop, the faster you’ll react and the more dead the opposition fighter pilot will be.
That’s where training and experience comes in, usually the pilot whose had the best training and the most experience will go through the loop much quicker than a rookie.
When working on the doors or inside nightclubs in my job as a door man, I apply the OODA loop relentlessly. Not only does it keep me on my toes, but it also allows me to react quick to any shenanigans going on.
After a couple of weeks on the job you establish ‘baselines’ or how things should look in a club, then when anything is not behaving as it should, the OODA loop kicks in and you can bring things back to baseline and deal with the incident.
I remember when I first got my SIA licence early last year, just after I’d finished uni. I didn’t know what the hell an OODA loop was, I’d have thought it was some mad American cereal or something.
In the U.K you have to do a course for the badge, so you’re licenced to work and they don’t teach anything like this.
The course isn’t comprehensive, you learnt the laws and the basics but other than that you’re shit out of luck and have to learn on the job. Unfortunately, not everyone is cut out or prepared for when things go wrong and can end up putting themselves or other people at risk.
Luckily, I had some great guys I learnt off when I first started. They took me under their wing and showed me the ropes and their advice has been invaluable since.
But I was one of the lucky ones…
Recently there’s been a big flood of people with badges who quite frankly don’t have a clue.
The job centres in the U.K. have been paying for people to do these courses and then unleashing them out into the wild with no idea what they’re getting themselves in for.
They’re playing a numbers game to improve their statistics of people employed, not caring if their suitable, people who wouldn’t send their soup back if a fly was in it, let alone eject someone violent from a club.
The thing is, I’m a firm believer that some of these guys are just a bit rough around the edges and just need to learn a few tricks and have a couple of scripts to use to stop them freezing up in tense situations which happens all too often with newbies to door work.

I’m still polishing it off but there’s literally nothing out there for guys that have just passed their course and thrown into the deep end, so that’s where I thought I could genuinely help them find their feet and not be chewed up and spat out.
I talk about everything from ‘baselines’ to OODA loops to what to wear. I’m proud of it and hope it can help some people out.
I’m gonna build out the sales page and run some ad’s to it next month, so it’s pretty exciting times.

Anyway, try using the OODA loop in your day to day life. You’ll be come more efficient and you’ll feel like James Bond when you react to stuff quicker than everyone else.
